There’s an epic I’ve been writing for all of last year’s men
‘Cos I’m so sick of fighting just to have my heart broken again
I’d like to paint a picture of how it used to be
Extract the fragrant bitter poison that was you and me
Friends and lavish dinners, private talks with men
I hear you say “She’s pretty right?” And someone answers “6 of 10”
Johnny Cash and whiskey, under your employ
All that I am left with: a plastic fast food kids’ meal toy
Given gifts I couldn’t keep, Late at night, Oft I’d weep
Whispered Secrets I confess, Apollo’s fallen prophetess
If I could have had it my way
We’d be shining in the holy light of day
But your desire to destroy me, o love of old,
Is breathing life to the truths that now are to be told
Remember last November, down by Chelsea Piers?
Flicked your smoke right at my face to see if you could rouse my fear
Or when you phoned from San Francisco, said to call your mom and say
You tried, You failed, You love her as you drove your car into the bay
Vandalized like faces of old Egyptian queens
Damaging the image removes her power to be seen
When finally uncovered, how painful it can be
Who’s keeping Nefertiti’s secrets, do we leave her rest in dignity?
If I got drunk and called your bluff
We’d end up detained, both handcuffed
Held captive in Babylon
This queen is kept far from her throne
If you could hear the stories that we speak
It wouldn’t sound to you like Ancient Greek
Like they should have taught back in Helen’s Troy
We weren’t put here to serve the whims of little boys
Now I can still remember when I believed in love
Those days way before my little baby heart it got too tough
Cigarettes and and snowfall, Gatsby’s last request
Recite the words I learned to curse in Latin, Greek, Urdu and French
Spotlight on the cage I’m in, wishing I was small
Anything you wanted, no tending to my needs at all
Tarot cards I’m reading tell visions of the years
All the time I wasted on hollow smiles and bitter tears
When I slipped up, you got rough
Couldn’t tell my mama about that stuff
Lock & key, the unknown
Oracle blessed adyton
If people heard the prophecy I tell
You’d be burning in the holy fires of hell
But ears of Man are so untuned
before they understand, entire lives are ruined
